It's a sick day at our house today, poor Chase has this nasty flu/cold thing that has taken his voice away and given him a very sore throat. Rob went off to help our friends, Chris & Marie, pack up their last load before leaving us for Chris's new job in Santa Barbara. He sent home with Rob the seedlings of Sugar Pie Pumpkins - they'll be in the ground soon! We will miss them but they are only a phone call away.....
I cut out these little monkey faces for Audrey's actual birthday so that I could hang them up as a banner. I never finished the project (could it be because I started it on her birthday!). I decided that instead of letting the cute little faces, that I found on the Martha Stewart website, go to waste that I would make little drawing/notebooks out of them - along the lines of the penguin notebooks except they have blank paper in them. I was thinking of Audrey and Merrick as I made them so I made two, one for each of them. They are two little monkeys and if there is a monkey in your life that you would like a notebook for I have extra and would love to make you one. I can make 8 more but here is how they turned out....
I added a little graffiti of my own to the house one night so that Rob could see it in the a.m....
I have graffiti ideas for the Makayla and Chase but those will come later - when they don't expect it.
I have exciting Mr. Popper's news - I put a request out on a Yahoo! group that I belong to for information about getting in contact with a scientist from Antarctica so that the kids could get a little more first hand information and sure enough someone was kind enough to reply! I was so excited - I e-mailed the scientist and she RESPONDED! How cool is that! She gave me information about what she did personally while she was in Antarctica in December & January and then gave me great links to find out more info from this past expedition. The Dr. was so kind by taking the time to respond and answering questions. Depending on how Chase feels these next couple of days we are going to see what it is like to be a penguin and carry an egg on our feet. We will be doing this with beach balls though so watch for pictures. We are also going to be looking at how at the buoyancy of a penguin. These ideas are not my own, I have taken three different studies and tweaked them. I am using TCR Guide for Using Mr. Popper's Penguin's in the Classroom, HOC Continent Study of Antarctica lapbook, and Evan-Moor's January issue of Making Pocket Books. I use the information that I need to coincide with what we are reading. It may sound like they don't work together, but it is really interesting to see how it is meshing together.
It's fun to see how all things work together!
LUV THEM!
Very cute...ok so you're sick...thanks for not contaminating the world even more...since Talia and I went to church with colds this morning ;)
I you DO have materials for another notebook I would be happy to assemble one for Ian....you're awesome! I can't wait to show them your blog photo to get them excited!
see you soon

Oh, oh I don't think I'm going to be able to help myself; I am just going to have to CASE your little monkeys for some notebooks for our house too. Gorgeous~!! Way too cute.
